A Game of Thrones (ASOIAF: 1) #Review

Title: A Game of Thrones
Author: George R.R. Martin
Rating: ***1/2
Genre: High Fantasy

I recently finished reading the epic fantasy novel, A Game of Thrones,  which is the first of the five published novels of the series, A Song of Ice and Fire.

Did I like it? Let’s go through some points and give points out of 10:

Length: Too damn long. And the story has just started. Some parts were there unnecessarily. This book could have done with at least 150 fewer pages. And it would have been easier to hold it too, then :3 [3 Points, Mr Martin]

Violence: Okay, this was creepy but so goooood! I love creepy things. And scary. I have not cut so many carrots in my life as many heads were cut (or melted) in these 800 pages. [10 Points, Mr. Martin]

Drama: Oh boy, although it did not even get close to the drama in a Hindi serial but still, good. Bro-sis drama, family drama, bastard-dwarf drama, relationship drama. It was a good mix. [7 Points, Mr. Martin]

Comedy: Yep, this book made me laugh. Several times. Tyrion’s humour, Drogo’s English, and the stupid prince. And the dragons! Haha :p It was not a roller coaster ride, but just enough to go with the plot. [6 Points, Mr. Martin]

Relationships: Drogo and Dany’s was a spit on the face relationship. That’s not love from any angle, effing moon of life. She was just a vessel for his son who’s the ‘stallion who will mount the world’. Viserys and Dany? Ugh. I am glad about what happened to him. So very glad. In spite of some good relationships between the characters, the bad ones took all the limelight.  [4 Points, Mr. Martin]

Nudity and Sex and Euphemisms: Not cool, bro. Not cool. 19 times the word ‘Manhood’ has been used.Could it be more irritating? Dany is 14. FOURTEEN. FOURTEEN  [0 Points, Mr. Martin, ZERO]

Complexity: Not that confusing, I must say. If it would have been any less, it would be boring. Albeit the names were pretty complex. It would have required some serious skills to not forget the spellings while writing the novel xD [7 Points, Mr. Martin]

Characters: The normal, loved some, hated some, loathed some, wanted to kill some, pitied some etc. Some clever, some stupid, some pretty, some ugly, some loyal, some not so loyal. Like every other book. Nothing really new. [7 Points, Mr. Martin]

It was fun reading this, sometimes not. Some things were written unnecessarily. And some things were downright bullshit. I got some quotes though, so it balances the hate. But it was way too long. Should have been short. The next one will have to wait till I clear my exams i.e. till July next year. And the TV show? That I’ll watch before reading the second part, to refresh the memory. Not before that.  Tata!

Tell me how you liked the book! (And please, no spoilers)
